McAfee Total Protection Review

McAfee Total Protection

  • Protection for all your Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices
  • Very good malware protection score
  • Excellent detection of malicious and fraudulent websites
  • Robust firewall
  • Virus protection promise
  • Includes Ransom Guard, PC Boost, and many bonus features

  • Missed some modified ransomware samples
  • Some poor lab test results
  • PC Boost web speedup still works only in Chrome
  • Mac edition less feature-rich than Windows or Android
  • Even fewer features for iOS

Computer security used to be simple, ages ago. You’d buy antivirus software packaged in a box in a retail store, bring it home, and install it on the household’s single PC. That experience seems so quaint in the modern age, when every household member has multiple devices, be they Macs, Windows boxes, or smartphones. McAfee AntiVirus Plus is designed for the multi-device household. With one subscription you can install protection on every pc, phone, or tablet belonging to every household member. Installed on Windows, it’s practically a full security suite, with a wealth of features beyond mere antivirus. Android users also get a ton of security features. You don’t get nearly as much in a macOS installation, and still less on iOS, but that’s normal. No matter what sort of hardware you own, a McAfee Antivirus Plus subscription is an excellent value.

How Much Does McAfee Antivirus Plus Cost?

You pay $59.99 per year for unlimited McAfee licenses. That's rare. Most competing companies offer one-, three-, five-, or 10-license subscriptions. For example, about the same subscription price as McAfee’s gets you 10 Sophos licenses, three licenses for Bitdefender, ESET NOD32 Antivirus, or Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and just one Norton license. Roughly $40 per month gets you a one-device license for many antivirus products, among them Bitdefender, Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus, and Trend Micro. With unlimited licenses, McAfee’s pricing has them all beat.

You may see descriptions on the McAfee website or on product boxes that mention 10 licenses. Don't worry: You really do get unlimited licenses. My McAfee contacts tell me that when lining up against other product boxes in a store, "unlimited" confuses some customers, so they display the number 10 instead.

Protecting Your PC

When you click the PC panel on the home page, McAfee uses a panel at the top of the resulting page to show you its recent PC-protection activities. It might report the number of threats it removed, or the number of risky connections blocked, each with a button to see full details. You can dismiss these notifications by clicking a button labeled Got it.

Lab Results Both Good and Bad

I follow four independent antivirus testing labs that regularly publish reports on their findings. All four include McAfee when they round up products for testing, which is a good sign. It means that they all consider it a significant product, worthy of their testing efforts. McAfee’s test scores range from perfect to poor, however.
